Smart Sindara Visits Modupe Cole Home
It was a bright December morning in Lagos, and Smart Sindara was busy packing her backpack. She wasn’t packing books or her usual gadgets, though. Today, it was filled with toys, snacks, and colorful crafts. Sindara’s teacher, Mrs. Adebola, had organized a visit to Modupe Cole Memorial Home, a school and home for children with special needs. Sindara couldn’t wait to go.
“It’s the season of giving,” Mrs. Adebola had told the class. “And helping others makes the world a better place.”
Sindara loved the idea. Her twin brothers, Timi and Tami, had laughed earlier when they saw her backpack overflowing with items. “Why are you taking all that?” Tami had teased.
“To share, of course,” Sindara replied. “Christmas is about making everyone feel loved.”
When Sindara arrived at school, her classmates were buzzing with excitement. The bus ride to Modupe Cole was filled with laughter and carol singing. The air smelled of roasted plantains from roadside sellers, and the streets were decorated with twinkling Christmas lights.
When they arrived, Sindara saw children sitting in the courtyard, some in wheelchairs, others laughing and playing. A few waved shyly as the students stepped out of the bus. Sindara noticed that the home wasn’t as colorful as her own neighborhood, and she silently vowed to brighten up the day for everyone there.
The group was welcomed warmly by the staff. “Thank you for visiting,” said Auntie Grace, one of the caregivers. “The children are so excited to see you!”
The visit began with Sindara and her classmates performing a Christmas carol. The children at the home clapped along, their faces lighting up with joy. Then came Sindara’s favorite part: the activities. She had a plan—one of her famous Smart Sindara ideas!
“Let’s do a craft workshop!” Sindara suggested to Mrs. Adebola. She quickly organized her classmates, pulling out the colorful papers, glue, and markers she had packed. “We’ll make Christmas decorations together.”
Sindara paired up with a boy named David, who was in a wheelchair and had the brightest smile she had ever seen. Together, they made a paper chain decorated with stars. “Look at ours!” David beamed, holding up the chain.
“It’s beautiful, David!” Sindara said. “Let’s hang it up on the tree.”
Meanwhile, her classmates helped other children make cards, ornaments, and hats. The courtyard filled with laughter and colors, as everyone shared glue sticks, markers, and smiles.
After the crafts, the students handed out snacks and small gifts they had brought. Sindara gave a toy car to David, who rolled it across his lap with glee. “Thank you, Sindara,” he said softly. “This is the best Christmas ever.”
By the time the visit ended, the children at Modupe Cole were smiling from ear to ear. As the bus drove back to school, Sindara looked out the window, her heart full.
“That was the best day,” Timi said, sitting next to her.
Sindara nodded. “Christmas isn’t just about getting gifts—it’s about sharing love and joy. And the best gift is making someone smile.”
From that day on, Sindara promised herself to visit Modupe Cole every Christmas and to always find ways to help others, no matter the season.
